Well it’s time to start getting ready for winter. Since i bought the Forester in april it only had summers on.
Went with Yokohama Iceguard G075
Only thing left is to check how much it costs to install a block heater

I’ve got some baloney skin tires on my car right now and I’m thinking about investing in some winters this year, so I have a couple of questions. I live in DC so it’s not like we get super hardcore winters but, if we get any significant early snow and no warm up periods afterwards, you can be driving around in some tundra like conditions.
What are the features I should be looking for in a winter tire and when should you put them on?

I wouldn’t bother in DC. For the few days a year you might need them, I’d work remotely (if possible) or just drive carefully. They are magic, but it’s a lot of money to spend for less than a week of magic.
In any event, if you really want them, you’d just want some stud-less tire. Bridgestone B lizzaks are normally well regarded, but also on the pricey side. Ideally they’d be on before the first snow, I normally get them done sometime prior to Thanksgiving, but honestly in DC you could probably add another month to that most years. And then get them off at the end of February or the start of March.
Really though, some all-seasons should be fine for DC.

Ours came with a battery shield and block heater, it’s been great up until recently starting in the winter.. (Actually it always starts, it’s just the restart after dropping the kids off.. I think it’s fuel related and only under very specific conditions.)
We had Michelin X-Ice2 and now Blizzaks. Both were amazing. Love Subaru winters.

My local dealer has a 20% off on Blizzak WS80's right now, I could get through another winter on the Blizzaks I have but fresh rubber would be nice.

I live right outside of DC and have never had winter tires. I lived in Boston and Rhode Island and got by fine on all seasons as well. If you really want winter tires, I’d suggest something like Nokian WRG4's or the Vredestein Quatrac 5, both of which are all seasons but also winter rated (with the little snowflake). If you are on summer tires now, I’d swap them out by H alloween or perhaps a bit sooner.
I run all seasons all the time, but I’m a daredevil.

On the cheap side, general altimax arctics are great. They’ve lasted me two winters, AND I didn’t take them off for the summer.
Nokian hakapalatias are another fantastic option if you want the best (and are willing to pay for it)

Got a crazy deal on some Pirelli winter Cinturato last year for my miata. Almost hoping we get more snow this year so I can play further. I was impressed with how well they did last year on ice with an open diff.

I really liked the WS80s I ran on the Mini and am thinking of buying another set for the Corolla. On the Blizzaks the Mini would truck through just about anything and they were great ice racing tires too. My only complaint was that they don’t clear the slushy stuff that well and tend to pack up instead.

I had the WS70's on my mazda for several winters, I think I liked them more but the 80's are rock solid. WS80's on a Subaru Outback or forester is like driving a tank. The car is just amazing.

hen I was in DC 15 years ago, we got doofed with four feet of snow. My gut feeling tells me that we may see more intermittent snowstorms this year.

I’m going to need winter tires this year, so maybe I’ll check these out. Price is going to be a bigger consideration than usual this time around .
I’ve been running Gislaved NordFrost5 in the winter for something like 8- 9 years now (on the Passat for 6 years, on a Golf before that) . Our dealer usually has a good promo for them in the fall . If I can’t get those, I’m going to have to really shop around.

Thanks for the reminder- two of the shows for my MINI were pretty worn down when I took them off last spring.

I have WS80s. They were fantastic last winter, looking forward to put them back on.

Will they work on a Sonata Hybrid?

If they come in your size, yes. I have them on my Fiesta ST. Didn’t get stuck all winter, after driving through numerous blizzards and -40.
